You want protection in case anything goes wrong so that you are not responsible for paying them when they have not completed their job as they have agreed.
If you cannot afford an event planner, you should try to do the work yourself. You can ask your friends to help with the preparations so that you are not bearing all the load on yourself.
When you are confident in your event planner and know what to expect, you will have a great event that you and many others will remember for years.
